Quotes from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

These are the 10 quotes I picked from the book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

“Well, usually I learn more from my sheep than from books”

I think “sheep” in this quote symbolizes experiences from life. “I learn more from my experiences than from books.” A trite saying, but it’s true. There are many things that can be learned from books, but there are limitless things that can be learned from life experiences.

“But when he thought to complain about the burden of its weight, he remembered that, because he had the jacket, he had withstood the cold of the dawn.”

This quote reminded me not to abandon something or someone once it no longer has any benefits for me. It reminded me not to forget to be thankful.

“The jacket had a purpose, and so did the boy.”

The reason I like this quote is simple, just like this quote. I like that everything and everyone has a purpose. Just like the jacket and the boy, I also have a purpose.

“Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.”

This quote is judgmental on people who judge others when they don’t act in a particular way they expected and I that’s why I really like it.  It targets people that are quick to judge but they are flawed themselves. It also shows that people lectures others on how to live their lives and to fix their problems but when it comes to their problems and how they should live their life, they cant figure it out.

“In the long run, what people think about shepherds and bakers becomes more important for them than their own destinies.”

This quote targets the judgmental people like the quote above. The people worry and talk about other people’s lives, however, they end up missing the point of their own life because being concerned with others’ lives becomes a bigger part of their lives than their own.

The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon.”

This means that you have to both enjoy the beautiful things around you and do your duty in order to feel true happiness. This sounds like the right type of happiness — doing what you have to do, yet enjoying the beauty around you. However, it seems hard to accomplish because in order to do your job well, you have concentrate and this could preoccupy you from observing beauty around you and also the other way around.

“I’m like everyone else — I see the world in terms of what I would like to see happen, not what actually does.”

I think this is very true. Sometimes you deceive yourself to make the situation seem favorable to you. I think this is also very dangerous because the truth will eventually rise to the surface and you will either be hurt or depressed by the truth.

“…he learned the most important part of the language that all the world spoke — the language that everyone on earth was capable of understanding in their heart. It was love.”

Something the erudite Englishman was searching for a long time over studies and research was something so simple — love. Again, like in the first quote I introduced, one learns more from my experiences than from books. If the Englishman had gone out and experienced interactions with people more instead of studying alone in his study every day for years, he could have learned that love was the universal language that everyone on earth was capable of understanding.

“If good things are coming, they will be a pleasant surprise … If bad things are, and you know in advance, you will suffer greatly before they even occur.”

This was said by a seer whom one of the camel drivers sought when the he said he wanted to know his future. I think this quote was very effective in changing my mind of wanting to see my future. I too, wanted to see my future — how I would look 10 years later, what job I would have, in which country I’d be living in, if any bad things happen to my family, etc. However, when I read this, it eased my desire. If anything good happens, it would be a pleasant surprise for me. If anything bad happens and I knew in advance, I’d have unnecessary anxiety and distress even before it happens. In all ways, it seems better not to know my future before it happens.

“It’s not what enters men’s mouths that’s evil … It’s what comes out of their mouths that is.”

This is what the alchemist says when the boy tells him wine is prohibited in here. It’s true that what comes out of people’s mouths can be evil because words can hurt people as much a knife can.

Daily Prompt : Twenty-Five

Twenty-Five

There are 26 letters in the English language, and we need every single one of them. Want proof? Choose a letter and write a blog post without using it. (Feeling really brave? Make it a vowel!) I will warn you for my cowardice before I tell you which letter I will leave out. Take a deep breathe. I choose letter Z. Now I’m going to write a blog without using the letter, oh wait. I’m not supposed to use that letter! Haha, almost! Wheew. Since I’ve written about 20 blogs already and I love my pet very, very much, I will tell you about my dog, Shampoo. 2013-12-02 10.28.13 Shampoo came to our family when I was very little. I think I got him when I was in about grade 3. The first impression of Shampoo was that it was very small. My mom could hold it in one hand. It was so light and white! When the person whom we are adopting from opened the door, it ran with its short, thin, white legs towards us. I even worried for a moment that it might be blown by the wind. It was that light and small! (No exaggeration!) In the owner’s house, she told us how many spoons of dog food we must give him per meal, how many times he eats a day, his favorite food, and many more. It seemed to like me because it sat with me more than he sat with my sister or my mom. I loved that, although the adoption was my sister’s idea and she was to be the owner of the puppy. On the first day he came to our house, he didn’t try to move out of his cage. But the next day, it came out and walked around, eat, and also peed and pooed. Later on, it even slept on people’s beds. Now, he sleeps where ever he wills. His favorite sleeping spot is on the pillow or on a pile of blankets. Oh, and about his name, the name we call him by is not Shampoo. We made another name for him that my foreign friends and neighbors can pronounce easily. Might have already guessed, but we named his nickname Shampoo because he’s white.

Daily Prompt : Sparkling or Still

Sparkling or Still

What’s your idea of a perfect day off: one during which you can quietly relax, doing nothing, or one with one fun activity lined up after the other? Tell us how you’d spend your time.

Both sounds really good!! It’s such a shame that there is only one day off. If there had been two days off, I would definitely do both. If I had two days off, I’d gather with my friends and go eat lunch, watch movies in the theater, take pictures in funny faces, eat dessert in a cute cafe, and of course, what all girls do when we meet, chat for ever and ever! (Boo to those who guessed gossiping instead of chatting.) After all the fun and “sparkles,” I’d have a very cozy day at home alone watching movies, series, and talk shows in pajamas cuddled in my blanket in my room. (Woah, the preposition chain! Haha)

Now, I have to face the cruel reality and choose between them. Oh no…

I choose……………. Staying home alone watching movies, series, and talk shows in pajamas cuddled in my blanket in my room!

I love meeting up with my friends but I love even more when I stay home and have time to spend very generously. I love the feeling of not being chased by time, because time never waits for anyone, even the president of America.

If that day off is tomorrow, I’d start downloading loads of romantic comedy movies before going to sleep today to be 100% ready for tomorrow. Oh wait, no! I’d start watching today because I wouldn’t have to go to school tomorrow anyways! Even the thought of having a day off tomorrow is so enlightening.

However, life is not so easy, so I should deal with no-day-offness.

Everyone, have a nice day!

Daily Prompt : Voice Work

Voice Work

Your blog is about to be recorded into an audiobook. If you could choose anyone — from your grandma to Samuel L. Jackson — to narrate your posts, who would it be?

The moment I read this, I immediately thought of the awesome, charming Benedict Cumberbatch.

Tada!

I know his male, middle aged voice won’t match at all with my girly, teenagery posts. However!! I love his voice. I would love him to narrate my posts. ❤

For your information: Benedict Cumberbatch is a British actor and a film producer. He is 38 and recently engaged to Sophie Hunter, also active in the same area of work.

I first saw him in a British TV series called Sherlock.

I think this is the best version of Sherlock Holmes I’ve seen so far. He didn’t look charming at first but as I watched the show, he turned handsome. His voice is totally charming. He has the British accent that everyone is in love with. In the series, his character talks really fast and I’m fascinated by how fast he can speak and at the same time deliver the message clearly.

I once also watched a clip of him reading Little Red Hen. Him making voice imitations of the hen, rat, cat, and the dog in the childrens’ book was so adorable.

I have written a short story in one of my posts. The prompt was to write about anything using words that start with all the letters of the alphabet. I think the prompt was called Alphabet Soup. I would love him to narrate that story. It would sound like a million dollar book even when the storyline is trashy.

Okay, this prompt has turned into a fangirl-ling post. Haha.

In conclusion, I choose Benedict Cumberbatch to narrate my posts to be recorded into an audiobook because he is the person who has the best voice in my opinion and I want to hear him make imitating sounds again.

Daily Prompt : Musical

Musical

What role does music play in your life?

Music plays a very big role in my life… or so I think because I need music in my daily life.

Every morning in the shower, I need to play music in the bathroom. First, I played songs so I have an estimation of how many minutes I took to shower and sometimes to warn myself when I’m taking too much time. However, turning on music in the morning shower became a habit and I don’t go into shower without my phone even when the phone needs to be charging or even when I’m late. Now I’m not even cautious about how many songs had passed.

I need music not only in my morning shower but also when I study. When the surrounding is too noisy or I cannot concentrate at home when I study, I turn on songs without lyrics. When I listen to songs with Korean or English lyrics, I start to lose focus and end up listening to the song instead of studying. I read that when you’re listening to music while studying, the perfect volume is to turn the volume loud enough to block out surrounding sounds but not too loud that the music is all you hear. Music had been a great helper and companion in my studies. I remember during the latest exam, I went to the library to study for the next exam. First few minutes were very silent, but then group of students started packing in and the library became as loud as the school cafeteria. There, I pulled out my earphones and tuned in to Studio Ghibli Music Box Collection. I downloaded it just for studying. It’s an audio file of many different Miyazaki’s music in his animations. They have no lyrics and are so nice to listen to.

Other than showering and studying, I listen to music for entertainment. Singing in the karaoke is one of my favorite ways to release stress and enjoy!

I’m sure everyone in this generation loves music. Music is everywhere! ❤

Daily Prompt : Not for Thee

Not for Thee

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received that you wouldn’t give to anyone else? Why don’t you think it would apply to others?

(Thanks for inspiring this prompt with your suggestion, glitterweaver!)

This is not an advice I’ve received from someone. I came up with this myself.

I study better at midnight when no one is awake. It’s a better study plan for me to sleep during day time after school and wake up to study for the finals until the next day, but I don’t give this advice to others. It would be bad for their health for one. I heard that 10 PM to 4 AM is the time when cells rejuvenate but if you’re not asleep during that period of time and using your energy, it is less likely for the cells to actively rejuvenate. (I’m not 100% sure with this fact. Maybe some people made it up so kids sleep on time.) Also, it can make people very sleepy while taking the exams, which is very, very bad. I don’t think my method of studying is worth the risk of falling asleep during the exam.

Another reason why I’m so discouraged to share my way of studying is that every studying blogs or articles stress on how bad it is to study at midnight. I just met this article just now telling me how bad it is to wait until 10 or 11 PM and study after midnight while searching for the picture of studying at midnight. I’ll show you an excerpt of the article.

Bad Habit #4: Studying After Midnight

Do you frequently study well past midnight? If so, and again, I say this with all discretion, then you’re an idiot. But you’re also in good company. A surprisingly large percentage of college students think the proper way to review is to wait until 10 or 11, then push through until 3 or 4. This terrible on so many levels I don’t know where to begin. So let me just sample a few high points from the abundant terribleness. First: you can’t concentrate in the middle of the night. Second: staying up that late screws you up the next day, you get sick, you can’t focus, you need naps, class becomes an ordeal, your health and fitness decrease. And so on. Work early, in small concentrated chunks. Get your work done well and fast, and leave your nights for relaxation and, dare I say it, sleep.

There, it explains all the reasons why you shouldn’t follow my advise, or why I shouldn’t give my advise to anyone.

Daily Prompt : Wronged Objects

Wronged Objects

If your furniture, appliances, and other inanimate objects at home had feelings and emotions, to which item would you owe the biggest apology? (Thanks for suggestion a similar prompt, zaji!)
Oh, this is such a cute prompt! It would be just like in the Disney animation Beauty and the Beast! I had a lot of objects flashing in my mind. “Should I apologize my chair for mushing my butt on it every time?” “No, no. It’s what it is made for. It wouldn’t have any complaints for doing what it’s supposed to do.”

“Should I apologize my fridge for constantly opening and closing its body and going through its guts?” “No, no. Actually, I want an apology from it for having such sturdy doors that I have to swing my body to get it open.”

“Well, then should I apologize my long pillow I capture with my legs every night when I sleep?” “No, no. How nice would it be to feel needed and cuddled every night?”

After all the long thoughts, I ended up with my fan. 20150107_230057 My dear, dear friend who has always been there to keep me cool in the hot sunny weather of Thailand. How rude I must have been to treat you like that. I have used you like a slave, commanding you with my dirty, full-of-bacteria-and-germs feet. I apologize for my impudence of feet use. You must have felt so distressed for having to work your wings when I rudely pressed your buttons with my toes. I beg for forgiveness. I promise to treat you with more respect next time. Yours truly, Young In x

Daily Prompt : Cause, Meet Effect

Cause, Meet Effect

You can singlehandedly create a causal relation between two things that are currently unconnected — a word and an emotion, a song and an extreme weather event, wearing a certain color and winning the lottery. What cause would you link to what effect, and why?

First of all, thank you so much for giving me this awesome power. This is awesome.

The two unconnected things I would create a causal relation are bank notes and good deeds. You may already guess what this cause and effect will be like. Sorry I’m not so creative, but here you go. Every time a person do good deeds, a bank note will fall from the sky. This I believe will make the world a much better place.

Imagine planting a tree or a beautiful flower and you see a bank note falling from the sky directed at you. How encouraged would people be to do good deeds? Careless people would start helping the homeless and be nice to people around them to see another bank note falling from the sky. Caring people would be rich! Some may that doing good deeds to get money is not good because the intentions are wrong, but I personally think it doesn’t matter. Both parties benefit from the good deed and why would it be bad? The people who only did good deeds to get bank notes might actually realize helping others are not as hard as it was thought to be and how worth it it is to do good deeds and be a help to the society. Not only that but people could be more active in looking for places in need for help and expand their areas in doing good deeds. People will show more interest in areas where attention was not so focused. They will slowly cover all problems around the world leaving this place with no worries!

I would love to see a world where no help is needed anymore because they’ve already been cared for. It would almost be like heaven! (I said almost!)

Daily Prompt : New Skin

New Skin

If you could spend the next year as someone radically different from the current “you” — a member of a different species, someone from a different gender or generation, etc. — who would you choose to be?

http://wallpapers.mi9.com/wallpaper/horse-wallpaper-horse-runs-in-the-forest_95845/

I’d chose to be a horse. I’ve always liked horses. They look so smart and fit. Black and brown horses are so knightly. White horses seem so holy and sacred. Gandalf the grey (who later turned to Gandalf the white) has a white horse in the Lord of the Rings movies. The horse comes racing to Gandalf whenever he whistles for it. Horses seem so loyal to their owners. However, the horse I want to be is not ones that are loyal to owners. I want to be a free living horse in the forest. One that can travel where ever and whenever it pleases. I will drink from the ponds and eat the greenest grass in the fields. I might even find a partner (or lover hehe) who would travel with me.

Horse Couple HD Wallpaper

http://picspaper.com/horse-couple-wallpaper/8282/

I am excited just by imagining it! How nice would it be to run in a green never ending open field with my four strong legs! I would take a nap in the field in the daytime under the sunlight, no longer worrying whether I will get sunburns or not. I’d be so carefree. How healing does that sound! I would be free from human relationships which is something I find difficult to handle. Horses would be different, I know it! (Horses over humans, sorry!)

This makes me realize how free I want to be, but if I think about it, I am actually very free. My parents do not bother much about what I do or where I go. It is me who don’t go on adventures and do extraordinary things. I think I’m afraid of change and that’s why I like this prompt! It makes me become a completely different being, and therefore, do whatever I wish without bothering about surrounding eyes and what they would think about me.
